For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD. [13] And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
EXODUS 12:12-13
The Passover marked the beginning of the nation of Israel. It was a feast instituted by the Lord Himself when he allowed the destroyer go through the land of Egypt to cause havoc in the homes of His enemies. For the Children of Israel, though they were in the land of Egypt during the time of this disaster, they were spared. The Lord gave them the blood of a lamb for each house as a token for protection. In the last meditation, we mentioned that this destroyer is the devil, yet, he was a tool in God’s hand to execute judgement. We also emphasized the testimony of God’ protection according to Job 1:10, that He has a hedge over the righteous on every side and all that belong to them. The enemy cannot harm a child of God at will, except permission is granted to him like in the case of Job or, the hedge is broken due to compromise, Ecclesiastes 10:18.
What is the significance of this blood in the Passover? The blood was given to them as a token for protection. There are three things that blood symbolizes in the Spirit realm. First, blood is a symbol of life. Life is first spiritual before physical. Regardless of scientific effort, man cannot create life because, as Genesis 2:7 shows, it is spiritual. Leviticus 17:11 says For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. This means that the very life of God Himself, that powers all of creation, is in His blood. 2 Corinthians 5:4 says mortality is swallowed up of life. Life is greater than death. Hence, the angel of death saw the blood and fled.
Secondly, the blood is also a symbol of sanctification and purification. Hebrews 9:19-22 says almost all things are purged by blood, including all the articles in the tabernacle. Hebrews 9:13-14 says For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: [14] How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? Finally, The blood of Jesus is a person. Hebrews 12:24 says the blood of Jesus speaks better things than the blood of Abel. It is a person with a speaking voice. When the destroyer came to the door of the Israelites, he saw the person of the blood and fled. Isaiah 63:1-6 shows the fury and fierce nature of this person of the blood, who is Christ.
The reason for outlining these important meanings of the blood is scripture is so that when we plead or invoke the blood, we do so with understanding. The blood of Jesus has been given freely to us as our protection, life and sanctifier. Christ our Passover lamb has been shed for us and by His blood, we can be sure that we are free from the havoc of the destroyer. It is therefore of necessity that we invoke and utilize the blood of Jesus as a covering over our lives and all that pertain to us. In a subsequent meditation, we will learn how to use the blood of Jesus as a covering. However, it is important to note that because of the free gift of the blood of Jesus, we are exempt from the plague or pandemic that lays wait to destroy the ungodly, not just ourselves, but all that belong to us.
Prayer for today: Heavenly Father, thank you for the free gift of Your Son Jesus who shed His precious blood for the remission of my sin. By His blood I am purified and sanctified and can approach You without fear. By the blood of Jesus, I and all that are mine are shielded from every pandemic and ill that are caused by the destroyer in Jesus name. Amen.
