150 – Fill the waterpots with water

And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. [7] Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. [8] And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.

John 2:6-8 KJV

The miracles of Jesus through out the scriptures often communicated more than simply acts of power and kindness. After feeding five thousand men with five loaves of bread and two fishes, He was sought out by the crowd. In response , Jesus said in John 6:26 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. This meant that there this miracle had more than just eating the bread and being filled. If they had carefully observed, they would have noticed the one who had eternal life to give. Jesus healed and did works of God on the Sabbath to show that the sabbath was meant for man to enter into rest and not man for the sabbath and also that He was the true Lord of the sabbath that gave men rest, Mark 2:27-28.

Jesus’s first miracle in John 2:1-11, turning water into wine, also had spiritual significance to it. Jesus asked the servants to keep filling the water pots with water. These water pots were typically 20-30 gallon stone pots that were used for ceremonial washing by of their hands and feet by the Jews. When the pot was full of water, He asked servants to take the water to the master of the feast and this wine brought Joy and refreshing to the guests in the wedding feast. Spiritually, Ephesians 5:26 says that Christ as our bridegroom washes and cleanses us with the water of the Word. So we know that the Cleansing water is the Word of God that comes to us for our sanctification and nourishing. 2 Corinthians 4:7 also calls us earthen vessels that house a treasure. Ecclesiastes 10:9 also says that a feast is meant for laughter and that wine makes the heart merry. Wine is the overflowing of the Spirit in a heart that produces Joy, like on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2.

Isaiah 12:3 says that we will experience Joy as we draw waters from the well of Salvation. This was the case of the master of the feast and the guests in that wedding. However, if the servants had not been obedient to draw water faithfully, there would be no wine ,that makes merry, to serve. Jesus also says that out of the belly of Him who believes, will come out Rivers of life giving waters, John 7:38. Where does this water come from? In John 4:13-14, Jesus told the woman at the well who was drawing water, that if she drank the water that He gave, she would never thirst. He promised that the water will spring into eternal life. Yet, she had to come to him for the water. The miracle at the wedding of Canaan is an encouragement to us. The more we labour in studying the Word of God, going to Jesus to get waters to drink, whether we understand it or not, we have a promise that the waters will spring up into a well of living water. We are promised that the waters will turn into wine and we will experience Joy at its springing into Salvation.

It is only the Springing up of the water that brings life. It is only the converted water to wine that would make the heart merry unto Salvation. Yet our part is to keep reading the Word faithfully, confessing and meditating on it. God’s part is to convert this word in our heart to a revelation that transforms and saves our souls. The result is wine that is not for our benefit alone, but also for all who will encounter this Word of Joy and Salvation from our lips.

Prayer for today: Lord Jesus thank you for Your Word unto me today. Help me to be obedient and faithfully fill my earthen vessel with Your Word. I know that as I meditate on Your Word and confess it, faith will rise within me and this Word will spring up unto eternal life, not Just for myself, but for all who will encounter this Word by looking at my life and hearing this Spirit inspired, Joyful Word of Salvation.
